The School of Languages and Culture (SLC) was founded in November2019by mergingthe former School of Foreign Languageswiththe former School of Chinese Language and Culture. It is now one of the youngest and mostdynamicschools of Tianjin University ofTechnology(TUT).
SLC offers an academic master’s degree in Foreign Languages and Culture,as well astwo professional master’s degrees:theMaster of Translation and Interpreting (MTI) andthe Master of Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages (MTCSOL). At the undergraduate level, it provides three majors,includingEnglish, Japanese, and Chinese Language and Literature. Among these, the Japanese major is recognized as a municipal first-class undergraduate program in Tianjin.Currently, SLCis home to1330postgraduate students andover 1400undergraduatestudents.
SLCconsistsof three departments–English, Japanese, and Chinese Language and Literature–and two teaching divisions:College EFL Teaching, and Teaching Chinese as a Second Language for International Students. It has a total of 136skilledstaff members of various categories,including119faculty members,9professors,38associate professors,20master supervisors, and40holders of Ph.D. degrees.
Adheringto the socialist orientation of higher education, SLCimplementsthe fundamental task of nurturing virtue and talents.Guided by the school motto of “Fostering virtue through language,integrating wisdomof East and West”, it is committed to cultivatinghigh skilledlanguage professionals with practical expertise and a global perspective. With a strong focus on both teaching and research,ithas witnessed a substantial rise in both the number and quality of its research achievements. Over the past five years, it has secured a total of5science projects at or above the provincial level, including3projects funded by the National Social Science Fund of China.As a teaching center, SLC is equipped with 15 digital network language labs and two simultaneous interpretation labs, capable ofaccommodatingover 1,100 students at once. Additionally, it also has a translation lab, a stenography lab, and a cloud-based smart language teaching lab.
SLCfirmlyupholds theintegratedapproach of “bringing in” and “going global”, andplaces great emphasis oninternational exchange and cooperation. To date, it has established stable partnerships with over 20famousuniversities in countries such as the UK, US, Canada, Poland, and Japan. By utilizing global educational resources, SLC actively optimizesitseducationalframework toofferdistinctivedisciplinary programs, and enroll international exchange students from dozens ofcountries. It aims to tell China’s stories well and spread outstanding Chinese cultureworldwide.The school regularly invitesdistinguishedforeign scholars to teach at the English and Japanese departments. Each year, it sendsoutstandingstudents to study at universities abroad, including Swansea University (UK), Adam Mickiewicz University (Poland), Vistula University (Poland), Hiroshima University (Japan), Kansai Gaidai University (Japan), Osaka Institute of Technology (Japan), UniversityofHyogo (Japan),Josai International University(Japan), Nara University (Japan), Okayama Shoka University (Japan), Hagoromo University of International Studies (Japan), and Reitaku University (Japan). Foreign Languages and Literature

Foreign Languages and Literature is a first-level discipline offering an academic master’s degree. It began enrolling students in 2001, and now covers three areas of study, including Foreign Linguistics and Applied Linguistics, English Language and Literature, and Japanese Language and Literature. Over the course of three years, graduates should develop fluent foreign language skills and a deep understanding of foreign language knowledge, as well as familiarize them with the basic theories and research frontiers in the discipline and its related fields. They will acquire the fundamental research methods, uphold the academic ethics and standards, and lay solid foundation for further doctoral studies in related disciplines. They will be qualified forundertaking language research and teaching work, as well as handling foreign affairs and management tasks in enterprises, government offices, culture institutions, and the education and technology sectors.
Foreign Linguistics and Applied Linguistics
Foreign Linguistics and Applied Linguistics isa sub-discipline within the broader field of Foreign Languages and Literature.The focus research in this program is Western linguistic theories, instructed second language (foreign language) acquisition, foreign languages and foreign languages teaching, and language testing. Core courses include Western Linguistic Schools, Applied Linguistics, Second Language Acquisition, Research Methods and Thesis Writing, Cross-Cultural Communication, and Translation Theory and Practice. The program aims to foster high-quality professionals who possess a deep understanding of linguistic and translation theories, strongability inforeign language teaching , and solid research skills in language education. .
English Language and Literature
English Language and Literature isa sub-discipline within the broader field of Foreign Languages and Literature.The program focuses onthe works of contemporary British and Americanwriters, includingthe modernist themes and styles of American writer Henry Miller, the works and themes of British fairy tale writers such asLewis Carroll, John Ruskin, Charles Kingsley,Edith Nesbit, J. R. R. Tolkien, and C.S. Lewis, as well as the styles of Chinese-American female writers and their works.Courses offered includeEnglish and American Novels, Appreciation of English and American Literary Works, Western Literary Theory, and American Women’s Literature. The program is designedto train high-quality professionalswith a broad foundation inliterary criticism abilities and literary literacy in English and American literature, capable of teaching and conducting researchin English and American literature.
Japanese Language and Literature

Master of Translation and Interpreting (MTI) is a program offering professional master’s degree. In line with the university’s unique strengths, the program focuses on advanced engineering translation and interpreting, and offers the courses such as Introduction to Translation, Basic Oral and Written Translation, Engineering Translation, Topic-based Interpretation and Preparation, English-Chinese Sight Translation, and Simultaneous Interpretation. It aims to cultivate interdisciplinary and high skilled professionals with a solid foundation in English and Chinese as well as strong translation skills, making them competitive in the international markets and qualified for roles in international organizations, multinational corporations, state-owned enterprises, and government foreign affairs departments.

Master of Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages (MTCSOL) is a professional master’s degree program designed for both the international and domestic students who hold a bachelor degree in Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Language (TCSOL) or related fields. The program aims to nurture high-level, international, and interdisciplinary professionals with proficient skills in teaching Chinese as a second language, and strong cultural dissemination capabilities and intercultural communication skills, capable of undertaking the task of teaching and disseminating Chinese language and culture. They are expected to master skills in teaching Chinese as a second language/foreign language, possess strong oral foreign language abilities, and demonstrate proficiency in foreign language teaching and intercultural communication.
